THOUGHTS
At the heart of this story is the idea of collecting memories of loved ones. It is a process to help bridge the gap between generations and to help those who remain to keep a memory alive. Grandma Sayuri comes from a family of collectors. They can collect all kinds of things from delicate procelain, frogs and even the dog collects socks. Sayuri grows up and has kids of her own and her kids have kids and they are all collectors expect one, Yumi. Yumi prefers drawing and doodling but after a summer spent visiting her grandma in the hospital Yumi learns that she can be a collector, a collector of stories and drawings. Her extraordinary collection becomes one that celebrates her grandma’s life.
Here is a sneak peak into the book. My daughter and I love the bright, colourful illustrations by Catherine Toennisson. My daughter loved little Yumi drawing everything as it reminded her of herself. As a mom I thought the concept of celebrating her grandma’s life through stories told by members of the family and drawn by the little Yumi so precious. It truly would be an extraordinary collection and cherished keepsake for the entire family. I would recommend this book to parents, grandparents, teachers, and libraries as there are many themes that can be discussed.
- Family connections through generations
- Coping with ailing grandparents
- Being unique and true to yourself
