So, when a mysterious visitor approaches him with the promise of adventure, Tommy jumps at the opportunity. Whisked away to a school in the sky where magic rules and storms are forged by an elite group of Sky Raiders, Tommy learns that the world’s problems are much larger than his own. When the weather spirals out of control and a rogue Raider’s diabolical plans surface, Tommy must decide how much he is willing to risk to save the world.
MY THOUGHTS:
Pulioff’s new middle grade fantasy series will have young readers itching to attend Sky Raider Academy as well. A compelling series that will draw kids in from the beginning. It drew me in and I’m an adult. Eleven year old, grade five student Tommy feels like his life is a mess. His father has just died and his mom has moved back with his Uncle on a Llama farm. He doesn’t make friends easy and from the start at his new school becomes a target for the school bully. One night he is visited by a man who says he was a good friend of his dad’s, Mr. Bellarium. Mr. Bellarium is the head master of Sky Raider Academy, and Tommy’s dad was a Sky Raider too.
In order to go to Sky Raider Academy a special anklet has to be placed on. This will keep your physical body what looks to be sleeping in your bed but will allow the wearer to soar into the sky and take a part in another world above the clouds. The Sky Raiders monitor and manage dangerous storms all over the world and Tommy has been chosen to attend Sky Raider Academy. Almost immediately he feels like he belongs and makes friends there.
However, there is more then just learning about what it takes to be a Sky Raider. Tommy is told that someone is sabotaging Sky Raider equipment, designs and other raiders themselves. This person may have even been responsible for killing his father. Tommy embarks on his adventure determined to become a Sky Raider and find out what really happened to his dad.
This story is captivating, I believe the magical school will appeal to all readers. Who wouldn’t want to go on a magical rollercoaster through the clouds taking you all over the globe studying the specific weather patterns of the world? There is fast paced action where the new recruits save the day from the rogue Sky Raider. And of course, a bully who unsuspectingly ends up eating crickets at lunch.
For me, I also quite enjoyed the descriptive language used in the book. I just loved this phrase,
“gut bomb detonated, lodging chucks of flapping butterflies in his throat.”
I look forward to the next book in the series and would recommend this middle grade fantasy book to both boys and girls, and teachers.
