Around this time of year I always watch The Sound of Music with Julie Andrews and one of my favourtie songs from the movie is when she sings My Favourite Things. I love the simplicity of the items and it helps to me to think of the simple things in my life and to really focus and appreciate them. Those things that really bring me a moment of joy when I see, hear, feel or experience them. I have created my own mama version to help me remember a few simply things so I don’t feel so sad.
FAVOURITE THINGS
When the kids fight
When the coffee spills
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favourite things
then I don’t feel so bad.
Bedtime butterfly kisses, pink blooming flowers, scrapped knee snuggles and morning cuddles
Hot showers with lavender soap and reading that goes on for hours
These are a few of my favourite things
Peppermint hot coco, sand between my toes and sandcastles
Bubbles in my bath and wine glasses
Twinkle lights on my tree, late night cups of tea and kids all a glow
These are a few of my favourite things
When the kids fight
When the coffee spills
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favourite things
then I don’t feel so bad.
Shooting stars, mars bars and salsa dancing
Sugar cookies with butter cream icing, ballerina tutus with lace
and dress-up tiaras with pink sparkly diamonds
These are a few of my favourite things
The Sound of Music, sing out loud songs and good times with friends
Kids art that hangs on my fridge, cozy fuzzy socks on cool winter nights
and siblings who share and play nice
These are a few of my favourite things
The first snowfall of the year, snow forts and ruby, red cheeks
Little girl giggles and little boy jokes
and all moments that make us a family close
These are my favourite of things
When the kids fight
When the coffee spills
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favourite things
then I don’t feel so bad.

My family has had a range of illnesses so far this holiday season and I was starting to get frantic with thinking of all the things that I just can’t get done this year. No Christmas cards with a nice family photo. No fully decked out decorated house. No tons of Christmas baking.
