My Thoughts:
I just love the idea of these little socks with their own personality. One of the very first book reviews I ever did on this blog was The SockKids Meet Lincoln Blog Tour in 2013. I loved how Sullivan used the socks to teach children reading the story about an historical figure. In this new The Sockkids Say No to Bullying by Michael John Sullivan and Shelley Larkin and illustrated by Alexandra Gold, we learn how Sudsy and Wooly find out about their human who is being bullied at school and Wooly opens up about how he is also being bullied in the drawer by other socks as well.
Ethan, Sudsy and Wooly’s human, is being bullied at school for not hanging out with the boys and instead wanting to read and hang out with a girl who also enjoys reading. A typical taunt by the group of boy bullies:
‘She’s a nerd. Nerds read books. We don’t hang out with nerds.”
And Wooly the sock asks:
“Is there something wrong with me because I like to read more than I like to play sports?”
The story teaches the kids and socks how to deal with the bullying, how to solve problems as a group and how helping others can make you feel good too. For parents and teachers it is such an important concept to lift our boys up for more then just playing sports, and to encourage and nourish them in whatever their passions may be. Unfortunately, the association between being a nerd and reading is still as relevant today as it was when I was growing up. I could see this as an issue here in Canada junior high (aged 11-14) but this book would not appeal to kids that old. This book is perhaps best suited for elementary aged children approximately aged 8-11. This is not a picture book but more like an early chapter book as there is a fair about of text on each page to read.
The Sockkids give children a unique way to learn about making the world a better place. At the end of the book there are additional resources to help parents and children opening the door for healthy discussions.
