How to make a Joy Journal

Simple DIY Joy Memory Journal

We love journaling in my house.  Well, at least I do!  I know my love seems to be rubbing off onto my daughter because as I was creating my joy memory journal she wanted one too.  No problem!  They are so easy to make and you can turn it into whatever kind of journal you desire.  Joy, Summer, Winter, New Baby, Wedding, Anniversary, Travel… Whatever you want! What kind of journal will you make?  Let me know in the comments.  I have summarized my process in a youtube video below along with a few photos.

Supplies needed:

  • leftover scrapbook paper
  • twine/cord/yarn
  • project life cards/ or ones of your own making
  • Stickers/Washi Tape/Stamps/Ink
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Paper Cutter/Trimmer
  • Ruler
  • Pencil

Anything else you might think of, the sky is the limit really.

Step 1:

DIY Joy Memory Book

First, I cut my scrapbook paper to the size I wanted.  I decided I was going to go with a flip book format so I measured 10.5 cm into a 12×12 scrapbook paper.  I love using my extra scrapbook paper for other projects and I love the double sided ones as well.  I will then take my strips of paper and fold them in half.

Step 2:

Then I measured where I wanted the holes to go for my twine or cord to hold the flip book together.

Step 3:

Pick your twine or cord and assemble your paper in the order you would like.  Insert twine and tie together.  Somethings I learned while doing this part.  Don’t tie to tight or the flip book will have a hard time opening but not to loose either.  Find what you think will work for you.

Step 4:

Now you can add your project life cards in or not.  Now is the time you can decorate to your heart’s joyous content.  It is a joy book after all.  Use stamps, stickers, washi tape, whatever you want.

Here is a video I put together to show the process a bit more.

Here is the inside of my daughter’s and my joy flip book.  She has added her favourite stickers.  I added stickers of two things that bring me joy.  Coffee and scissors for crafting.

Now my daughter and I can fill the Joy Flip Book with our favourite things.  I can journal memories, write my favourite quotes, add some pictures or special memories that brought me joy.  She doesn’t write exactly yet but she tries to copy mom.  I will give her photos to add but she will likely fill it with her favourite stickers.  She loves having a book just like mom.

I hope you have enjoyed this diy project of creating your own Joy Flip Book.
